Biological defluorination
Finding biological routes to break some of chemistry’s most persistent bonds.
01 / THE PROBLEM
Where the question begins.
The carbon–fluorine bond helps make fluorinated chemicals useful, but it can also make them difficult to transform in the environment. Understanding the biological chemistry of these compounds is a step toward new treatment possibilities.
02 / THE QUESTION
How can we identify biological activity that transforms fluorinated substrates and releases fluoride?
↗03 / THE APPROACH
From a question
to an experiment.
I connect enzyme activity with measurable fluoride release and biological responses. The aim is to develop ways of finding promising activity, then investigate the chemistry behind it.
